Producing Sustainable Protein for Over Half a Billion People
Africa has about 400,000 small and medium fish farmers, with Kenya representing almost 50,000 farmers.
Overfishing, climate change, and environmental degradation have not only increased the vulnerability of these smallholders’ income and livelihoods, but have also impacted over 400 million people in Africa – almost half of the region’s population – who depend on fish as their main daily source of protein.
Natural fish stocks in lakes and along coastlines have become extremely depleted, losing up to 80% of their former populations.
As a result, over 40% of the fish consumed in Africa is imported, even though the continent has sufficient resources to support domestic production.
Kenya - one of the top fish producers in Africa, faces a deficit of about 300,000 tonnes of fish per annum.
The fish sector currently supports the livelihoods of 12.3 million people in the continent, notably empowering females in the process since 58 percent of the actors involved in post-harvest activities are women.
